Ahhh well.. I was right after all . Results are out. ‘Rang De Basanti’ Indias entry, is out , Deepa Mehtas Canadian entry ‘Water’ is in. This is the pen-pen-ultimate round. Final nine, leading next to the final five which will be the official nominees.

My post ‘In Wait- Oscar’ to do with the film that might eventually create a stir at the Oscars, had ruled out RDB as a possibility, for reasons ennumerated therein. I had clearly mentioned ‘Water’ as a contender, although a Canadian entry, but taking over from the Indian entries in the foreign language film category.

Deepa Mehtas sure having the last laugh. She was hounded out of the country, not (more…)

A very happy Lohri to all North Indians.

My earliest memories of celebrating this ‘bonfire festival’ go back to the days when Bombay (as it was then called) seemed to be a place where all festivals were celebrated with fervour and sans self consciousness. (more…)

Its always an arduous task to essay a look back with consummate fairness and unemotional detachment at the year gone by and arrive at an analysed version, which appears as an exemplification of serious thought wedded with a positive stance. .despite the foreseen dangers of ugly repetition of situations that defy redemption.

However for some, the above comes with ease and skill. One such is Tarun Tejpal whose recent article in ‘Tehelka’ had me re-reading and in consonnance, wholeheartedly. (more…)

As if the visual of the exercise leading him to the gallows was not enough, despite being looped continuously almost in barbarity and apathetic primitiveness, what ran concurrently on television channels was this gruesome news..The Nithari Killings..The first of its kind in India if not the world. Singur..Caught In the Quagmire

Filed under: India n Me,This Gets To Me — Kaveeta Oberoi Kaul @ 2:08 pm

Update 16th Mar’07: Showing no signs of abating, the problem seems to have mulitiplied manifold.

Tata has indeed unfurled a dramatic explosion of unrest.

Saptarshi Das a regular reader at Sachiniti has written such a poignant post to do with the tragedy of Singur. It is an issue that deserves highlighting and pondering if not grieveing over. The chasm between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ seems to widen with no hope for reparation.

And of course that it was a young 19 year old girl whose spirit seemed threatening enough to be snuffed into ashes..is a mere..Coincidence. India respects her women..the feminists/indignant citizens are only a volatile lot who enjoy blowing numbers and incidents out of proportion..or is it out of the comfort zone of those who WISH to project it otherwise!

If only being ashamed made a difference… if only…

Tapasi Malik. Along with her father, this 19 year old was protesting… the confused encroachment of industries on agricultural land. Tata Motors would be coming out with a four wheeler with an awesome price tag! The one lakh car might change some parameters in the lives of ‘so-called’ Indian middle class; many a dream might come true…

Early morning she was going to the fields afar- the nature calls (bloody we don’t even have proper toilets out there and lo! There would be industries booming and jobs galore! Guess am the only cynic around); like routine, like clock work, the day would begin for her- or so she thought! (more…)
