Updated 6th Oct’2010: Priyadarshini Mattoo .. not avenged !The header seems a little incongruous now with the latest development of the Supreme Court having commuted her murderer Santosh Singhs sentence from ‘death’ as accorded by the High court to ‘life’ imprisonment. If this was not the rarest of the rare case what would be its denotation! She was stalked for years, cold bloodedly then and with pre meditated planning, raped and murdered.

Priyadarshinis father is a shattered man today! Rightly so!

Original post :

Its not often that one decides to prefix ‘divine’ with ‘justice’ given several cases where flouting of laws and subverting of justice has been almost rampantly prevalent. With the sentencing of Santosh Singh to the gallows, the rapist cum killer of 23 year old Priyadarshini Mattoo, 11 years back, ‘divine’ connotes more than just ‘heavenly’ intervention. It is a salute to the judiciary..finally.

In a grotesque incident Priyadarshini , a law student, was stalked by a fellow student Santosh for two years (more…)

Indian films are as if strait jacketed into a mould whereby Box-office returns are the single most crucial factor determining creative decisions. Any wonder then, that tried and tested films are being squeezed of every drop of latent potential, re-hashed and presented afresh in the pious hope of achieving another block buster credited in a film makers repertoire. The predominant cult of ‘lifting’ foreign films, after having reached saturation, apart from the uncertainty of guaranteeing success , led to this ‘creative’ route of now re-mixing films! Meanwhile…

October this year has been a time of festivity..what with Dassera, Karva Chauth and now Diwali all coming up in quick succession… Not complaining..plain overworked. Shopping, tailoring, coupled with the fetish for a squeaky clean home to herald ‘Dhanteras’ can lead to taut nerves and a short fuse..Am extremely unpopular with domestic helpers, these days. That I appear with two horns, a tail and red eyes even in their dreams is a possibility.Oh well!!…shall win them over with gifts.

Kavita Chhibbers e mag has some interesting articles this month..mine included. Ahh now, modesty is a virtue for the faint hearted. Sounding hopelessly out of character? I hear yoo..The time of the year m’dear..(sigh) will get better in a week or so..promise.

Meanwhile..read on

One of the lessons I’d imbibed early in life was the transcience of all things materialistic. Included in that categorisation was, believe-it-or-not, fame,’fickle fame on a shifty plate’ It frightened, unnerved, rattled me. Something within, made me cringe at every opportunity that remotely led toward the direction of an in-the-face existence. That it would always be accompanied with ‘baggage’ of the undesirable, had made a dent deep enough in my psyche. ‘Peace of mind’ I had convinced myself, was an antonym to ‘popularity’..oxymorons.I chose the former with complete conviction. Few directors in India have left me wanting for more. One of them is Mahesh Bhatt. He possessed a rare sensitivity and astute talent in detailing human emotions If you notice I have intentionally switched to the past tense, since he has declared his resignation from active ‘direction’ of films or so he says…most of the films under his banner presently smack of the “Bhatt Saab’ touch…for better or worse.
