Brace yourself for some wild gloating about moi in Toi.. in the second half of this post!!

Meanwhile, the legendary Mumbai monsoon has arrived! For many it proves to be a source of great nuisance, erratic trains, pot holed roads, dampness galore, for me nevertheless a welcome relief, a time to romanticise. It takes a lot to incite me these days. My maids quite aghast at the fact that a treasured broken vase, is met uncharacteristically with just a disapproving look, a mild reprimand and an advice at caution. She is as yet, I presume, wondering whether it has to do with her prayers or the almost perfect ‘pakoras’. Drat.. will she ever guess it has to do with almost perfect weather? Come October and my elephantine memory is gonna get her into a chase!

It’s been a rather furious 24 hours in Mumbai.. the rain Gods either angrily lashing out or passionately blessing the parched Mumbai-ite is a matter of perspective.. depending on how and what your travel schedule has offered you. I preferred to sit by on the balcony, dreamily watching my plants soak in the nectar and share in their joy. Did I mention I simply love monsons?

Now for the ‘TOI’ part of the title. There is a popular column that appears on the “Westside plus” supplement of the aforementioned newspaper called ‘Sandras Bandra’ authored by a spirited young Nita Deb. I received a mail from her sometime early in the month asking me for reactions on the onset of monsoons. I replied back , donning my utterly romantic albeit romantic Mumbaikar hat.

She apparently liked it enough to quote it in her column the following Friday.

But that was dated June 8th .. you might ask.. why now? Valid question. You see, the morning of June 8th might have been one of the proverbial ‘harrowing’ ones in most wives/mothers lives when the whorl of domesticity on one hand and demands of the worldly kind on the other, might have made mince of my routine. Resultantly, I guess I missed reading the lot of papers ( quite a few) or at best may have taken a rather perfunctory glance through. So missed “Sandras Bandra”.

Yesterday, I received a mail from an old school friend who’d read the bit and found excuse to get in touch with me. The story then unfolded…

So, while one is soaking in the delicious rains, thunders nonetheless bring back memories of another day 26/7.. which one hopes, fervently prays is never repeated in the life of a Mumbaikar again..

Meanwhile a couple of buildings have collapsed and water logging continues..sigh.. some things never change!

  1. Absolutely. Its scary really..I thought after last year and year before 26/7 what you have described there would be a sea change.. but the sea never changes does it? P.J but even

  2. Sometimes I wonder if we might have loved the rains had they been a twelve month feature as in England? My wife always said that shed love it but I would find it bothersome. I read the column you mentioned. My place of work is in that vicinity. So Kk of Khar.. any affinity with K’s?

  3. Lol Niloufer..thats a good tag line for the BMC. But honestly the apathy and impunity with which these guys go on to doing what they are good at doing best.. Nothing.. is amazing.

Dilip your wifes another romantic eh? But I guess the gray clouds hovering around as a matter of routine will take the novelty and magic away. Small dodes keep the romance alive. too much will be a deluge.

And yeah the K factor? Synchronicity or what! My college was at K-emps corner..Sophia’s!!

  4. I have been going crazy..its horrible to travel and on top of that you reach work looking like a hag early in the morning. one thing i hate these days is getting up in the mornings when it is all wet and rainy and nice. Thank god the worst one was on Sunday.. I just sat home and chilled with aloo parathas. As for BMc its not even worth talkng of any more. My road got clogged in one shower. The gutters have begun overflowing. I just dont know what footwear to use.. in this slush. Gum boots actually is the most ideal if only i didnt have to bother about my colleagues.
