Mukesh Ambani Gifts Wife Nita- 242 CR Jet!! Srk Gifts Farah A Merc!!

Kaveetaa Kaul

Ads which have so far ruled the roost with messages of undying love proclaimed via diamonds for some and the modest Prestige cookers ( think ‘jo biwi se kare pyar woh prestige se kaise kare inkaar) are gonne look so ‘pheeka’ /outdated/archaic now that Mukesh- larger-than-life-Ambani has bought his wife Nita Ambani a Rs. 242 crore Airbus 319 corporate jet as a birthday gift.

Will-o-the-wisp- longings in vogue, much in demand aspirations with the moon seemingly within reach..Thanks to the almost unattainable eponym-ish characters gaining real life credibility.

I gulped on reading the news screaming across Mumbai Mirror, amazed, amused, somewhat envious but mostly scandalised. First Antilia( Read details of his mansion here) his humungous mansion and now this..though I must candidly admit I find the couple hugely endearing. Nita is simply gorgeous. We attended a social do some time back where they as well as hubby and me were invitees and I found them to be down to earth and highly affable.

Notwithstanding.. A Jet? Whatever for? Is she planning to drop the kids to school in it to avoid traffic bottlenecks? This was my first reaction..rather frivolous I confess.. slowly other doubts clouded the cryptic mind.

Do news reports stridently proclaiming him the richest man in the world even if only for a day till the stock markets manipulated their bullish tendencies ( now aint I cynical)have to exemplify so brazenly the acquired status? For one, think what this would do to Tina Ambani and the rest of the Cuffe Parade wives?! Have a heart Mr. Ambani. You have irretrievably set unattainable precedents for the already hypertense, cholestrol afflicted dudes, surviving on Viagra and cosmetic surgery to mask their frenzied anxiety ridden lives. Tsk Tsk..birthdays will never be the same again!

Though what brought a cynical smirk was this little detail:

The Reliance Industries chairman will finally have his office in the sky. After he bought the aircraft, Mukesh got it customised at the Associated Air Centre in Dallas, Texas. It has a state-of-the-art business office and cabin management system for games, music, satellite television and wireless communication. But more interestingly, it has a master bedroom, master lavatory with a range of showers, galleys and a sky bar in the forward lounge complete with mood lightin

In other words make a grand show of gifting your wife at a rather opportune time, while in actuality gifting yourself an extravagant present. This sullenly brings back memories of that fateful birthday when hubby in his unique wisdom decided to gift me a much prized English crockery set for my birthday! I was aghast. All romantic notions whisked outa the window forever. The poor guy had no clue as to why I was howling.. blabbering in -between how he doesnt care for me anymore. Men are at such times, much to our disgust, at a complete loss for words which only makes us howl louder. I mean ,while it is true that I had hankered/hungered for it, but not as a b’day gift! It was akin to me presenting him a 96″ Sony Plasma/LCD T.V. for his! Not fair. Personal gifts only, is the undeclared rule..aint it? Sniff.. a rose would have meant so much more! I can be such a sucker.. I hate myself for it.

Coming back to the Ambanis. The ‘gift’ was apparently meant to be delivered in April. Delay brought it down to November so well.. create a stir and some propoganda/ showman ship by coinciding it with Nitas birthday. Hmm.. he isnt the “Top Boss” for nothing.

It does compel one to doubt the purpose of purchase. A jet is fine in this jet age. But making a bally ho of it sounds ‘ Oh- so- middle- class’ as Mrs. Sarabhai would say. It may be a first in India but definitely not the world. So is this whole gimmick out to show a thumb to junior Ambani.. Anil, so that he may lick his chops in disdain?! I think so.

And while we are on this topic.. here is more. It definitely is raining gifts for some of our charmed Mumbaikars. SRK on his birthday, today gifted Farah Khan a mercedes benz s350.

Now thats umm.. a largesse. But wait there is more. This too was cleverly noodled(!) with the news of SRK having loved OSO ( not casting aspersions on that front..farah sure knows her looks interesting)…so much so that he decided to show his appreciation by putting her out of her misery of travelling in an SUV. Farah dear is pregnant with triplets and finds the ride too bumpy. The gallant knight made a really sweet gesture methinks. How many producers are so magnanimous to a Director? I can recall no second name.. can you? But ask me for a dozen names on Producers who have usurped rights of a director, financially and creatively and..pronto they will be presented.

Sigh.. Yet, a merc is no big deal. But a jet!! Where the hell are they gonna park it? Oh Yes.. Antillia the Greek island palace atop Malabar Hill right in ‘apro Mumbai” ! Ah ha.. so the plan was well etched. And we morons go cribbing for the lakhs ( 2-7) one dishes out sometimes to procure parking space for each of our cars in the compounds, not even under stilts. The higher the high rise greater the charge despite it being an illegally accrued fund, against supreme court orders.!!

And when will I stop proclaiming all dewy eyed to hubby and kids.. ” I dont really care for material trappings.. all I want is the love and caring I get from you!”. Naivete never becomes a woman of today!! Learn babes!

Kidding.. Wealth is unimportant as a sum total if not a component of things other than material.

We just dont have it guys.. admit it.. we dont have the vision and style ! Some of us are so desultory as to spend birthdays at orphanages and old age homes to bring a smile on a tear stricken face. Do the headline makers want to write of it? Dont be silly !Why would they bother to showcase a boring , unexciting day spent sans booze and dard-e-disco whatever that means!!

Isha Ambani daughter of Mukesh Ambani one of the top three Indian women to be on the Forbes list Of worlds wealthiest here.

  7. Lol Venkat..When that one percent equals the state budget for roads (I think!) then the heuristics presented by you are specious. In any case one had not questioned the propriety of his purchase…liked the implied humor.. if it was in fact meant to be so.

I would like to draw ur attention to these legal eagles who are defending Pravin Mahajan ,Lalit, Alister and the boy who killed a 60 yr old along with a`16 month baby , show them the way .These lawyers are misusing their knowledge and encouraging, crime making the common man believe that everyone is for sale buy to save yourself. IF U CAN.

  13. Aneesh.. I have been pondering on ‘dard-e-disco’ and have arrived at this conclusion. ( Clearing throat noisily).. The process of disco-ing involves an attire which necessitates donning of stilletoes ( for females).Posited thus for hours on end unnaturally, simultaneously grooving to rockin music jab ‘control nahin hota’, results in aching screaming trotters and thus ‘Dard’>> how do you like that?

Next stop.. Chandamama door ke with Mukesh mama and Nita mami 🙂

    Hey Kausar babes,

    long time..

What you say is so relevant and I can sense your disgust. Point well taken. If not these few which you have quoted there will be another hundred ready to take on their cases. remember Ram Jethmalanis vocifeous rebuttals when questioned on him brazenly defending Jessicas murderers? He declared it his right to defend and a citizens right to fight for his defense till proven irrevocably guilty.

Lawyers have their own book of ethics.. which has on its first page a commitment to ‘making money’. Law is on sale, you are right.. there is no fighting that. What we need are judges who will disallow such transgressions and travesties. But will research more..since the matters are sub judice.

  33. This is a national disgrace for India.
One would have thought that a Stanford educated Indian industrialist, whose father had worked his way out of poverty, would be sympathetic and thoughtful of India’s millions … of their poverty … of their sensibility.

Instead, he builds this Babylonian edifice to his Ozymandias like ego … sans any aesthetic or ethics.

Mahatma Gandhi, another Indian, had said – “There is enough for everyone’s needs. But not enough for everyone’s greed.’

That maxim is applicable today to all of India’s elite … that close knit cabal of corrupt politicians, graft taking bureaucrats, thieving industrialists and fawning slavish upper middle classes.

They are so taken up with the idea of status, class and upward mobility … of Bollywood glitz and glamour … that they have cocooned themselves into a virtual huddle on their laptops and televisions and refuse to acknowledge that a desperate nation with red and angry eyes is staring vacantly at them … not knowing what to expect … not expecting anything … but justice … and a recognition that they, the poor and the deprived are humans too.

    Shame. Utter shame.
    The Buddha weeps today.

    • I do not disagree completely. your outrage is valid to quite an extent. But it is matter of personal choice at the end of the day. We live in a democracy, however dysfunctional where the freedom of choosing the us we put or monies to, has been granted. Personally, extravagances of the kind seem hugely immoral to me..but c’est la vie.

      Comment by Kaveetaa Kaul — October 18, 2010 @ 8:07 am | Reply

      • Mr. Ambani has done is Maoists a HUGE favour. Now they have more fuel for their movement.

The elite and corrupt network media has portrayed the disenfranchised poor as bloodthirsty monsters. Is this extravagance not violence?

The Maoist would love to see the elite say ‘c’est la vie’ when they are executed a la French Royalty; at New Delhi’s India Gate, at Kolkata’s Victoria Memorial, in Bangalore’s Lal Baug and in Mumbai’s Gateway of India.

Sorry, am afraid Ms. Kaul, you are sitting on the fence here. If you must criticise, then do so with conviction. Else you run the risk of being labelled an armchair critic.

Vikram Sarabhai, GD Birla and JRD Tata were enterprising too, but to them India’s need came first.

What I wonder gives the upper class elites this non committal nonchalance I wonder. Hmmm ….. Hipocracy.

        • Mr Ravi Kumar..To begin with you are reading and responding on the wrong post . Please connect with the link on the text in full and the comments section as well. Just flying off the handle in this fashion will hardly garner a response from me. After reading the concerned post if you can still aver that I am sitting on the fence or my views on the matter are not crystal clear then I am afraid what you are looking for in terms of response cannot be met here. I cannot possibly go on ad infinitum spewing venom on a matter .

  34. Ms. Kaul if such extravagance is hugely immoral to you then why does your article sound a eulogistic note? What was your motivation in writing it?

Was it to practice the brand of gossip laced ‘khatti meethi’ commentary that you could use to secure the real estate of few regular column inches and ensure for yourself a payola metered by the wordcount?

Write the truth. Attack the lies.
Do it headon. Do it consistently.
Else it is a placard and a canard.

    Comment by ravi kumar — October 19, 2010 @ 11:47 am | Reply

    • What is your motive in writing this piece of elicited from a bout of verbal diarrhoea? What do you hope to gain? What change do you think you can bring about? Why dont you channelise you inept energies in a more constructive manner? Why dont you hold a dharna outside Antilia holding placards of your infantile mindset? Hypocrisy is often laced in projected antagonism. What you forget to see in yourself is an aggressive hypocrite violating all norms of decency and protocal to somehow vent impotently. What a dumb charade.

The problem with the likes of you is that you find it difficult to read an assimilate and easier to go on a rampage vandalising others life and stamping it with your own narrow minded ill informed thought processes.

You even fail to see that my blog is not an ad based site. This is visible to even a novice but I guess you defy description.

To assay a discussion on my site mutual respect is a given. I tried to reason but since you have a personal agenda which I have no time or inclination to assess, I prefer that you frequent abusive sites, or those which conform to your idea of impotent bashing. I express my views with honesty and purpose but do not wish to cross limits of decency which, I am afraid is a concept alien to you.

      Good day and good bye!!

  35. You would make a very good Maoist.
But try Hindi… it reaches the grassroots.
Besides, the elite wouldn’t care for anthing
    that isn’t in English.

Ms. Kaul, decency is required to maintain
manicured lawns. It is required to keep
clubs exclusive for PEOPLE LIKE US.

Indecency … now that is stuff from which
slight can be generated … and a revolution started.

There is one underway right now.
And it isn’t non violent like the last one.
That doesn’t scare us … what will?

I didn’t mean to be rude.
But guess I stretched my rhetoric to
    breaking point. Regrets and apologies.
