Karva Chauth Tomorrow

Update 6th Oct 09:
Karva Chauth will be celebrated tomorrow i.e. 7th October(for 2009 click) with the women folk getting ready for their fast with ‘Sargi’ in the wee hours.

Inescapably, memories go back to childhood years when this tradition meant getting up at 4.00 in the morning to see my dear mother resplendent in her “gota-kinara’ dupatta with a big red bindi and hands lush with  deep happy mehndi. Never has the memory of that color faded. Never has it been replicated by the million mehndi walis who designed my palms and feet, Some things I guess are inimitable..like the love of your mother.

My mother passed away last year. I miss her so much today. Her blessings , her instructions her joie de vivre especially on this day. There was nothing as important in her life besides my father. Every moment was as  if a prayer in his devotion. This day was so special for her.  Our dining table even at that early morning hour when we awoke for ‘sargi’ was laden with parathas, aloo gobi sabzi, mithai, fruits, namkeen, coconut, paan, curd. We all merrily gobbled away although it was she who was fasting. (more…)

Adultery – A Growing Reality

A random query inviting responses is making its rounds on Facebook presently worded in this fashion’ Woman needs a reason to be unfaithful.. Man needs but.. a woman”. True..I’d say. Not meaning to generalise yet  concurrence is mandatory even if mordant.

A childhood friend, lets call her A, from as far back as school times is presently in a state of shock. Her marriage of 24 years is facing a nightmarish challenge. Having lived a life replete with luxuries and peace, harmony and joy for so long, makes matters worse. Why now? This was the time men return to home to roost.. and she had just discovered that her husband had been having an affair for the past couple of years.

Glaring signs  had made their presence felt for some time now. She had confided in me that she was often embarassed at her husbands sudden lecherous ways. (more…)

Shinjini Sengupta – A 16 Year Old Victim of Reality Shows

Kaveetaa Kaul

We as a society are degenerating into cynics and getting to be voyeuristic by the minute. Nothing reflects this better than the reality shows fast becoming the hottest serials on air. What are these reality shows? Just a documentation of tears and fears of vulnerable participants, frustrated judges venting and heightened drama thus staging a SHOW that keeps India enthralled ..I know I know.. it happens in the west too and in fact is a copy paste of those shows. (more…)

Mussoorie- The Queen Of Hill Stations

Kaveetaa Kaul

Just returned from a trip to Mussoorie

Mussoorie, the proverbial Queen of Hill stations, as professed by the British gentry who evaded hot, desultory summers of  Delhi and Kolkata by spending time here, has been an almost inveterate part of my life. Our family home was in Dehradun whereby Mussoorie by default was the summer spot. (more…)

Its been the longest gap ever in my postings at Sachiniti. If regularity be the sine qua non of a successful blogger then I plead guilty. Rreasons are indescribable and nebulous.

Badinage not being a forte, nescience not necessarily the culprit. Perhaps it was just a plethora of undientified thoughts as if engulfing you into…..numbness.

Everyday commenced with a resolve to ‘write a post’. Topic? There was the gruesome murder of Aarushi Talwar a 14 year old aglow with what only youth can afford. But something held me back. (more…)
