Congrats!!!! WE have done it.. The Taj Mahal has made it as one of the Seven Great Wonders! The listing is alphabetical and does not reflect number of votes..
According to media reports Taj has received the highest number of votes!! Wow …Great
Shall keep you updated on exact number of votes.
Meanwhile feast on beautiful pics of the New Seven Wonders and the function
Now that Indian citizenry has supported the cause and accorded Taj the glory it deserves, the Indian Government is obligated to ensure that Agra and the heritage structure abides by norms of infrastructural procedures essential to the tourism industry. Presently the conditions surrounding the Taj are appalling to say the least.
Update:
Results to be declared today..7th July.
You can watch Live Streaming of the Award Function here.
***********************************************************
Show solidarity for the monument of love The Taj Mahal.
Voting is on for the selection of the New Seven Wonders. Our Taj surely does deserve to be in the list.
Presently its not doing as well as one might have hoped, considering we are the largest democracy in the world and perhaps the highest percentage of online subscribers!. It has not even reached the 7th place as yet !! From the looks of it, metaphorically speaking, to be among the first few was the expectation!! Put in your votes asap guys. Its a matter of national pride and also a celebration of Love and the worlds greatest lover Shah Jehan.
Its amazing to be told by overjoyed anchors on the number of votes received via paid SMS’es for say an Indian Idol or Sa Re Ga Ma ..and few forthcoming via a free vote to prove pride for a heritage structure, the pride of India, the next inclusion in Wonders of the world?! C’mon guys I’m sure we can do better. One can do little about votes cast for the goons in U.P…but why not spend a minute for a worthy cause?
Sigh.. Ladies, think about it.. we aint gonna have another Taj dedicated to us..not even the tea bag variety.. so might as well revel in the joy of Mumtaz Mahal..although she had to die to fathom his love.. or am I being cynical!
Men folk ..you aint never gonna make another.. so the least you can do is vote for it as an example of what one of your ilk has left for all mankind to witness for generations. Take vicarious thrills and pride over this ‘monumental’ gesture of Shah Jehan. Dont make those like him any more .. Genetically differently engineered.. Now before the guys get incensed, lets admit well we women arent like Mumtaz Mahal either..we dont bear him a dozen kids!! Thats about all she kinda bettered us on ๐
From India you can send an SMS text:
To vote for the Taj Mahal by SMS
send TAJ to 4567
From USA:
To vote for the Taj Mahal by SMS
send TAJ to 94444

Comment by Krishnan — June 21, 2007 @ 6:56 pm |
No thank you…I do not want to vote for the Taj Mahal- because it is in no way liked to my national pride and niether is it a celebration of love.
1) My “national pride” is not so shallow that it is linked to some extrinsic body of architecture- I would rather associate my national pride with liberal democratic institutions (e.g. checks and balances, separation of judiciary, executive and legislatiure etc. etc.), liberal economic systems, fundamental rights in the constitution and secularism. I dont think the Taj mahal has anything to do with modern india and the indian nation. The taj mahal is older than even the basic conception of the indian nation.
2) how can a body of architecture be a symbol of love when its construction led to the suffering of millions of people. It is estimated that the Taj mahal costed some 32 million ruppes in the early 17th century (todays values~ a couple of billion $s atleast). This resulted in economic recession, extra taxation on common people and some historians say that bonded labour was used in constructing this “masterpiece”. Love = hurt, no thank you. I think its very twisted to call the Taj a symbol of love.
I would rather vote “for the goons in U.P.” because that way atleast i stand a chance of hoping that amongst these goons there is one gem who can make a difference to the system and bring positive change. Voting for the Taj mahal may result in a miniscule increase in western tourist numbers (especially seeing “how informed” the people in west are with regard to these rankings). However I dont see in any other national or personal benefit. So why bother?
Comment by Murat — June 22, 2007 @ 12:53 am |
Sigh..What a terribly cynical point of view. I wont even bother responding to that Murat. Sorry this reeks of undue spiky invectives unduly evoked. And this is not about disagreement.. I simply love a healthy debate, you know that. But this is more like being on opposite shores with no chance of a meeting point.
I’d much rather embrace reasons that enhance my love, whether it is for my country or my dear ones.
“Matdaan”=vote..Your ‘mat’ and your ‘daan’.. you no give, your choice! No compulsions.
Regards
Kaveetaa
Comment by kaveetaakaul — June 22, 2007 @ 10:08 am |
Hey kaveetaa,
A poet (or perhaps a rapper) once said, “Everybody has the power to make others happy…..Some leave trails of cynicism and pessimism, others trails of faith and optimism…..”.
I guess its healthy for society to have people on opposite shores. That way humankind atleast has knowledge of the “other-side” (of the argument). While you embrace reasons to love, i embrace reasons to learn (albeit history/histography in this case as well as a new word “matdaan”).Just for my own information what does the “mat” in matdaan contextually mean?
Comment by Murat — June 22, 2007 @ 6:57 pm |
hmmm..Okay!
So ..Hi there ..far away on the shore across tempestuous seas!
Mat= vote/choice/opinion
Literally therefore.. we donate our vote.
Comment by kaveetaakaul — June 22, 2007 @ 8:17 pm |
I sincerely believe that Taj Mahal it is one of the wonders of the world. I have been there twice (once very recently) and I found it very mesmerizing. Hence I voted. But about Shah Jehan being the world’s greatest lover I don’t know ? I think there is definitely a better candidate (Modesty prevent me from revealing any more). Perhaps Shah Jehan is world’s second best lover.
Comment by Shaan Khan — June 22, 2007 @ 9:21 pm |
Your Oh- so- Modest candidature lies suspended Shaan until such time that your Mumtaz comes forth and validates it, vociferously, categorically maybe even stridently. We lie in wait!
Presently my vote goes to Shah Jehan!!
Comment by kaveetaakaul — June 22, 2007 @ 11:22 pm |
Kav
In light of your protest, let us agree by saying that Shah Jehan was amongst the top two greatest lovers of the world. This statement, as you can see, does not invalidate your position, but yet leaves open the possibility for someone (should he choose to reveal himself) to step forward that claim his rightful title.
See Ya, ta tah …
Comment by Shaan Khan — June 25, 2007 @ 12:20 am |
You dont give up d’ya!
For the sake of geniality Shaan..till such time as HE chooses to reveal himself..ohhkkayy!
Comment by kaveetaakaul — June 25, 2007 @ 12:48 am |
It is the first million which is always difficult. After that making money is child’s play. Likewise in life it is the first agreement which is always difficult. After that it is 1-2-3 Cha Cha Cha. Before you know it, you will be also saying, “Yes Shah Jehan was only the second greatest lover in the world”.
Comment by Shaan Khan — June 25, 2007 @ 5:03 am |
Correction! Again..ONLY on validation from YOUR Mumtaz Mahal! Why the hesitation in committing to that Shaan ?
Comment by kaveetaakaul — June 25, 2007 @ 9:49 am |
Kav
Stop sounding like my mother/sisters. You guys cannot trick me into giving up my bachelor days that fast ๐
Comment by Shaan Khan — June 25, 2007 @ 7:50 pm |
Fiiinne..So there was just One wondrous lover in the world and that is Shah Jehan !! How can you even be qualified to be in the race Shaan? Forget wanting to build her a grand monument you dont even wanna commit? Tsk tsk..Thats another reason why women ought to vote for the Taj.. they just dont ’em like him any more!! He had a harem.. and our guys refuse to have one.. a solitary one!

Though i don’t believe in the distorted history surrounding ‘Taj’ for years now , i feel there is nothing wrong in voting..after all it belongs to India .But i feel sorry for our so-called secular historians who dare manipulate history and glorify villans of that era as “Heroes” , there is ample proof to prove shahjahan and mumtaz love story is utter rubbish , thanks to the film makers and historians and pseudo secularists we are forced to study distorted history and all false stories.
Comment by Aneesh — June 27, 2007 @ 4:41 am |
“here is ample proof to prove shahjahan and mumtaz love story is utter rubbish , thanks to the film makers and historians and pseudo secularists we are forced to study distorted history and all false stories.”
Aneesh how do you know for sure that the above instead is not distortion.. maybe the fundamentalists at work on this.
The point I am trying to make is that when there are two diametrically opposing points of view both claiming proof, and we are not really privy to details which could tip the scales definably in favour of any one, then go with what promotes Love. Its safer and atleast it hasnt brought up bile.
Comment by kaveetaakaul — June 27, 2007 @ 8:31 am |
‘Taj’ is no doubt a beautiful monument , infact i voted for it.
i don’t know if these books are available now or not

… I may be wrong but i personally don’t believe the popular story , at the same time i do feel the need to preserve our heritage structures from pollution ,terror attacks etc..
Comment by Aneesh — June 27, 2007 @ 9:12 am |
Thats the spirit..its always the larger picture that is all important. At the end of the day what we do or do not believe in personally bears little relevance to the broader perspective on National issues.

Hi Bijoy,
Apart from the Taj I voted for
1)Angkor Vat
2)Statue of Liberty ..the symbolism of hope, freedom, liberty, upheld high is impressive
3)Petra..the engineering feat is remarkable
4)Acropolis..personally visited there..its stupendous
Pyramiids of Giza as you know have already been included in these seven..as a left over of the previous decision. Also personally visited and a marvel..to say the least. The perfection and architectural precision is mind blowing.

I do not buy the process by which the voting is taking place. I have covered it on my blog this extensively. It is purely a money making scam. Have a look : http://trak.in/Tags/Business/2007/06/04/new-7-wonders-of-the-world-scam-to-make-millions-of-profit/
Comment by trakin — July 4, 2007 @ 8:35 pm |
Trakin..Read through your post.It was quite mind boggling. Now that one knows the process the conundrum falls into place as to why Taj had not made it to the top three by now, considering our population and the aggressive promotion on the electronic and print media , besides the internet.
Nonetheless, we have to keep pushing and doing our bit. Its not as if the recognition was not duly deserved! It is a rare monument and perhaps the single most dedicated to a beloved. If we do not celebrate love in these fragile times, it would be a shame.
Fingers crossed and a silent fervent prayer on the lips.

what bullshit guys! it seems all you in India are so ignorant of history and gullible also..hehehe makes me wonder india has no dearth of stupid fools like you all.
Shahjahan had over 5000 sex slaves in his harem and mumtaz was one of them. His Shah jahan nama actually confesses he used to have sex with his own daughter Jahanahra. So what monument of ‘love’ are you all on about when he actually captured through trickery this monument that was originally known as ‘Tejomaya Mahal’ from the great Rajput King MahaRana Jai Singh?
This islamic rogue was not on a construction spree of India but rather destruction spree like all his predecessors and destroyed the historical evidence of Tejomaya by chipping out the sanskrit with islamic arabic words. The sanskrit is still visble underneath the islamic inscriptions and have any of you bothered to note the Shiva’s trishul on top of the dome? It is NOT a muslim mausaleum as we are led to gullibly believe – but that it is an ancient Shiva Palace built on the Jamuna facing the East. Normally Islamic mosques and mausaleums all face west towards Mecca. Wake up uyou retarded dumbass fools. There are far better wonders of the Earth to be voted for like Angkorwat and Minakshi Madurai. Go learn history!
Comment by aryan — September 7, 2007 @ 3:28 pm |
I agree with Aryan. The Taj Mahal is believed to be a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
However, it still is a great monument that depicts Indian history and tradition.
