Sometimes inadvertently one recalls moments from films that seem to have been deeply ingrained in ones subconscious. Not necessarily those that inspire , yet they have made a dent. On the other hand there may be songs that leave one numb with emotion or romantic to the core, as the situation may be, when one listens to them. Sadly, most of these on screen leave you numb..this time sans emotion. Their picturisation is bereft of a modicum of innovation. They just dont live up to the promise of the music and lyrics. My list of favourite songs hence will differ hugely from the list of favourite song picturisations.
Songs in Bollywood are almost an adumbrate to story telling. There was a time in our cinema history where songs and their filming was as, if not more, important than the climax. Songs were not disparate from the continuum of the unfolding of the story. Makers gave it their all since what could be expressed lyrically, musically was far greater than the spoken word. Today, mostly songs are picturised for media promotions or incentive to entice the goer.Not universally so but largely speaking, rarely do song picturisations leave you wanting for more.
There are some which have a sempiternal quality. They are not just innovative in their picturisation, but the emotion evoked, or the newness of approach as if set them apart from the usual ..almost light years away. These have served as inspiration for the other makers who followed. It may not be just the song but the combined effect of the situation and the point of its inclusion in the film, the newness of sentiment exploited and the freshness with which that was sought to be conveyed.
Bollywood is unique in its song and dance routine remember? So the added positive of ‘originality’ cannot be overlooked as well since there is no question of having been ‘inspired’ by Hollywood. One is trying to pay a tribute to those behind these rara avis song picturisations.
Its impossible to create a list without enumerating certain filmmakers whose names itself denoted a ‘get ready’ for a visual and emotional treat in songs. Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Vijay Anand, Raj Khosla, Kamal Amrohi, Manoj Kumar, Chetan Anand. Its impossible to sift out the total number of the combination of songs put together.
But lets list a few which stand out. ( the comments accompanying the songs are not the ONLY plus points but perhaps an attribute not commonly known)
Guru Dutt:
# ” Yeah duniya agar mill bhi Jaaye to kya hai”..The Christ like silhouette was unforgettable.
# ‘waqt ne kiya kya haseen sittum”..Geeta Dutt , the pathos, picturisation, lyrics, tune, in a heady combination
# “naa jaao saiyaan chhuda ke baiyaan” Meena Kumari, like never before. A situation which was rare in films those days.
# ‘chaudhavin ka chaand ho ya aaftaab ho”..his love for Waheeda coming through unmistakably.
# bichchde sabhi baari baari’..Kaagaz Ke phool..the crowds sweeping the lovers apart..simply fantastic.
Vijay Anand:
Must begin by mentioning that ” Guide’ is one of the two movies( the other film will follow) on my list which carries the unique distinction of being a film where every song was memorably picturised.

The only other maker who bears the distinction of a film with all of his songs that have left a memorable mark in Bollywood history.. “Pakeezah”
# Chalte chalte..who can forget the ada, nazaakat, tradition, grace, choreography,beauty intercepted with the arrival of the train.
# ‘ inhi logon ne le leena dupatta mera’..apart from the dance in the foreground, have you been able to pay attention to the number of ‘kothas’ in the background visible, with each one performing a mujra. till the eye could catch? It was breathtaking in its detail. Singular such feat in Indian cinema.
#’teere nazar dekhenge zakhme jigar dekhenge”
# Mausam hai aashiqana”
The songs of “Razia Sultan were hugely artistic as well.. ” aae dil e nadaan”..but in comparison with pakeezah a notch lower.

# ” tum itna jo muskura rahe ho”..Arth . Mahesh Bhatt. perhaps the first time that mainstreaam cinema brought up the idea of a womans extra marital affair.or her rights.
# kasme vaade pyar wafaa sab baatein hain baaton ka kya..manoj Kumars Upkar which came close in freshness of all its song picturisations.
# kar chale hum fidaa jaanon tan saathiyon”.. Chetan ananad..huge salaam
# tum jo mil gaye ho ‘ Hanste Zakham- Chetan anand
# Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya”- Mughal e Azam. Sheesh mahal and its magical grandeur, apart from madhubala, Dilip Kumar
# Ik ladki bheegi bhaagi si – Kishore Kumars genius..vivid as ever.
# Dil dhoondta hai phir wohi fursat ke raat din” – Mausam. Gulzar. sanjeev Kumar re living his youth simultaneously was a first. Brilliant
# ‘ Roop tera masatana’- Aradhana..the wave of adulation this song and its intended passion created was unprecedented.’ It was just one shot.. the whole song.

#Hawa hawaii.. Mr India and Sridevi. Can watch it every day.
#Ek do teen.. Madhuri catapulted to great heights.Saroj Khans inventive talent on grand display.
# Kuchch na kaho kuchch bhi na kaho
#Pehla nasha pehla khumar.. first song to be shot in slow motion..Farah Khan was brilliant.
# Tanhayee- from Dil Chahta hai.. loneliness amazingly captured.
# Aankho ki gustaakhiyaan maaf hon.. such layers of playfulness, ‘every moment a new feeling’ way of picturisation. Fleeting, lively, grand..Lovely.
It was a great opportunity to stir up ones memory with moments and vicariously re live them..so its taken me a while to write this post also because one didnt want to miss out on greats. That doesnt mean in any way that this list is exhaustive, couldnt possibly be as presumptuous as to imply that. Simply that one can actually write a book if enough research is embarked on. There is enough material.

Oldies were the best. The songs of Kaagaz Ke phool and Pyaasa are my favorite. raj kapoor also. all sangam songs.Vijay Anand didnt come to mind automatically abut after I read this and the songs were reminded I do agree that he was exceptional. From the newer lot I like yash raj films and sanjay bhansali.

Yash Raj has quite a few good ones I agree. Kabhi Kabhi title song on raakhee was wonderful as was the situation. Dil to Pagal hai had some nice picturisations. SLB does specialise in songs..he used to be a choreographer remember with V Vchopra.

I love all of those songs, but I would add when it comes to picturisation “Ae Kya Bolti Tu” from Gulaam movie stands out too. The expressions and the style captures the essence of the song.

“Yeh duniya agar mill bhi Jaaye to kya”
This is numero uno song of Hindi film music. I would give it an Oscar every year. I doubt anybody can match the lyrics of Sahir , the voice of Rafi and the slow overpowering music of SD Burman. Just the way Rafi says Kya hai was enough for a dozen Oscars.
Oscar committee may not accept the philosophy of this song due to the way the words hit out at the shoody materialism. Anyway, I will give my due respects to the lyrics, the singer and music director and let Samajh ne wale, Samajh sakege, Na Samajhe , woh Anadi hai.

After reading this, I am so inspired to have a new category called ‘Rewind’ in my blog where I could discuss all the lovely ‘Shwet-Shyam’ songs that I have grown up watching in Morning Rangolis and Wednesday night Chitrahaars. Oh I miss those. Thanks a lot Kaveetaa for this another lovely post. Mose Chhal and Dil ka bhanwar are my all time favourites. But I am getting all nostalgic and want to open my old box of cassettes right now just to see the covers.

would like to mention here the songs of “Chor Aur Chand” ..beg to consider un bias. For the same reason did not include them in the post. But truly believe
they were path breaking in their picturisations.
E.g.
# Sapno me aana dil me samaana pyar kya hai mujhe tum bataana’”
It was shot on the beaches of Goa.. perhaps the very first time that songs were shot there, A dream sequence shot most un dream like, with subtle references of dream like ‘waves moving back instead of forward, change of attitude and demeanours etc. Visually overpowering at a time when songs were usually with a hundred dancers in the background, and matkas etc.
See for yourself.
Also the other songs
“lagna lagaa hai Mujhe aaj kal”.. on a bike in the hills of darjeeling.. Pavan Kauls tribute to Vijay Anand, or the original “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid”
Baat kya hai kaise keh doon
candid shots amidst crowds of two people in love and not admitting it but stealing glances, private moments in public.
Yogesh jis lyrics in
’ssanson ka kya hai pata, saanson ke bin jee lenge hum teri dhadkan ki dhun jo sun lenge hum”
I still recall the endless music sessions at home where the Director and lyricist discussed the nuances of the emotions sought to be brought out in the songs.
Chor aur Chand compositions are quite the fave of many including me.. I have right too as a viewer dont I:)

The decline of lyrics in Hindi films.
The trend to mix and the exponential growth of gadgets has killed words and lyrics in Hindi movies. For example, The ghazal of Rafi in the film Chirag ” Teri Aankon ke Sewa , Duniya mein Rakha Kya hai” Another song of Rafi which comes to mind is the song from Tere Ghar ke Samne ” Tu Kaha , ye Baata, …. Maane ne mera dil deewana” This one is haunting song done years before the sound revolution of gadgets and tongs used now. Just see the words in the ghazal and the haunting song. Then there is Kishore , with the great song from Mr X in Bombay “Mere Mehboob, ….. aaz Ruswa , teri ….” Then you had Kishore in ” Saaware ka Sooraj Tumahare liye hai” . The lyrics for Rafi, Kishore and Mukesh ( Jaane Kaha , Gaye woh Din in Raag Shivaranjini was mind blowing) had unforgettable words. I doubt any music director of the above songs ever used gadgets to filter,mix,and create some artificial sounds. So you can sum up in one line and say
“The word is dead , long live mixing”.

A Few Unforgettable Song Piturisations
I still feel fresh whenever I see a rare unforgettable piturized song.
Dilip Kumar reminded of his childhood love Nargis in ‘Deedar’ when he saw a child girl passing on horse ride. He sings the same song (in Rafi’s voice from low note rising to high) which he used to share with his beloved in childhood.
Adolscent Dilip (child artist Ajay Sahini) and minor Nargis (child artist Tabassum) singers Shamshad for Dilip and Lata for Nargis in song “Bachpan Ke Din Bhula Na Dena”
But now the scene has changed and Nargis is married to Ashok Kumar.
Dilip trying to recollect the old memories in RAFI’s Immortal voice, Nargis emotionally disturbed, Ashok Kumar confused and trying to control both of them and see the EXcellent unforgettable piturization-

Dev saab and Kalpana Kartik, what romance. They will put all the new heroes and heroines with tonnes, of make up, designer jeans and all the glitz and mixing music to shame. See how laajafied Kalpana Kartik is and sings closing the door.
Another song Aanchal me kya ji, See how Dev Saab in his charactertic style , removes the dupatta from the heroines face. Very sophisticated romance. Since the present day heroines want to have a dhoom machale doom , the return of sophistication in romance is impossible.

Anand ji.. I would go with Bachpan ke din bhi kya din the..maybe because I have seen and heard it more. Beautiful really. Lyrics and melody difficult to choose which was better. Makes you sit back and wonder about the bliss of your own childhhod..udhte phirte titli ban..bachpan.

Gajananji..such a beautiful selection. There was a certain ‘thehrav’ a calmness in the melodies and lyrics of those times.perhaps to do with the general mood of people. Today it is all about pulsating, throbbing, beats to cater to the youth. Cant help it. Changing times lead to changing choices. But yet today you do find the younger lot singing the older songs. Listen to any music competition. Its always these very melodies. So shelf life quality ki hi rahegi hamesha 🙂

YKG.. Great Discovery. yes this song is partly in slow motion. Keeping in mind that it was shot almost 40 years ago it is quite a feat. If you notice, that all the slow motion parts are in long shots. This is because achieving lip sync gets to be impossible.
Chor aur chand song sapnon mein aana was also shot in slow motion on a beach. Surprisingly the videos have been removed from you tube. Maybe a copyright issue perhaps reported by T series and their case with You tube.

I was travelling in train , once about two years ago in MP. As usual it was crowded. As the train came to Ratlam, two young persons , opened their jholas for money and started singing Rafi, Kishore and old songs, Both were excellent singers. One curious person asked those two, as to why they were singing only old songs. Their answers was a revelation. “Purana Gayak aur Gayaki aur Sangeeth , aaisa lagta hai ki woh aadmi ko sikha raha hai. Aaab ke gane me woh sikhana wali baat nahi hai”. The train kept chugging forward and with their rickety back up of instrument sang some of the best old songs. Persons in the compartment just forgot the humidity and there was no shor gul and no arguementts. In the next station , after 1 hr, they got down. People made sure they were well rewarded.
Yes , what wisdom , these two young persons had. They could make the difference so wisely. Yes , the old songs sounded as if they were teaching (sikhana) the listeners.
Now I have changed my atitude towards calling such persons with labels. No more , my countrymen, you are no slumdogs or beggars. You are the great wise persons of the East.
I wanted to write this long time ago, apologies for delaying these wise comments.

Fantastic Gajananji. So true. every word. I have often found the wisest words of sagcity coming from those jo zameen se jude hue hain. On occasions when I have had to travel by a cab i have always opened conversations with cabbies. They are so full of anecdotes and worldly wisdom tempered with practical spirituality. I have always then come to the conclusion that those who have seen hardships of life up close and personal are those with the most knowledge in their pitaras. Not empty, bookish, false plastic stuff but true wisdom born out of experience.
The sikhane waali baat is an example of this. These souls learn from any and every posible source. there was a time in BW lyricism that the grains of truth ememnated simply through the lyrics of masters like Sahir, Shakeel, Indivar, Yogesh, raja Mehdi Ali Khan, my father too. these wee men of learning and standard. The MDS too translated the sentiments of the lyrics in inspired melodies. Its no wonder then that these songs have stood the test of time. Youngsters at music competitions resort to these numbers to show their gayaki or then to show mature choice in song selection.
Its a pity that all that is lost today..completely.

Gosh.. Anand ji Madhubala was so amazingly beautiful and so vivacious. She spoke through her eyes and face with as much simplicity. Awesome is the word. The more I see of her songs the more I admire her talent. And the thing is its timeless. Doesnt seem dated even today…Thanks 🙂

It was sad to hear of the demise of Prakash Mehra Anand ji. The film which I liked the most for obvious reasons was Namak Halal. Amitabhs character was simply superb and the dialogues if you recall are legendary. Surendra Kaul was the genius behind Namak Halal, the script writer with a brilliant flair. He was my father in law. he is no more and I miss him terribly.
The scene from Namak Halal which is one of the most unforgettable in Bollywood history.

WAH KYA BAAT HAI !
Not alone you, we all the film lovers would miss remarkable script writer Late Surendra Kaul ji.I still cherish the starting scene (as it reminds me of my childhood days) of Namak Halal when DADDU Om Parkash awakes son Amitabh. I just love to watch that scene repetedly.
I don’t think the present day directors can ever come near to the story or conceving scenes like Namak Halal. Remember ‘The Party’ scene when Amitabh goes to search his Punjabi Jutti ! Such films could be seen with entire family with great laughs & fun.
Well I wish to dedicate a similar comic song for Late Surinder Kaul ji.

Yes its true Anand ji. Those like Surendra Kaul Ji come into this world once in a way.The only tragedy is that they are so pure within that in this milaavat ka zamaana their pristine quality can be a threat. But I am truly proud of him.
