Mahatama Gandhi-Just a Parody for Gautham Prasad

The visual of a Gandhi look alike pole dancing, making ridiculous gesticulations, brandishing a sword, running around in utter buffoonery caught my attention. It was a channel airing the clipping which a wannabe comedian Gautham Prasad has proudly broadcast on his site as an illustration of his skewed sense of comedy and which has been lappedup and linked to various other.

In his own words “He describes the performance as one of him dressing up in Gandhi’s clothes, then doing a slow stripping dance but falling short of nudity”… I guess here we are supposed to bow our heads and Praise the Lord..or rather Praise Prasad for his sensitivity in sparing the Mahatama of nudity! The outrage in India, Prasad says, “is the first negative response I have ever received. The audience loves it. You can hear their laughter in the video.” Can we have a clipping of the audience please? One really wants to have a ‘vision’ first hand of those who enjoy this travesty!

Its not over yet..his justifications…here goes “”no one is above parody.” Nor is any event. The ‘Guru Of Comedy’ explains, “Comedy is tragedy plus time. You can have something that is awful and painful and over time you get the maturity to laugh about it.”

Oh yeah..So then why does not he take off on his beloved ancestors, grandparents, parents? Or better yet, while he is at it why does not he try creating a fantabulous spectacle of the Prophet Mohammed? After all Prasad argues that he is an entertainer and its his job to provide comic relief. Why has he not tried making the Arabs and Muslims laugh to that…since no figure, authority, even a Prophet is sanctimonious enough to be spared! Or was it just simpler to pick on Gandhiji?

Freedom of speech is one armour behind which the most exasperating of expostulations are made, either on the web, or in our real world. Its fashionable to be irreverent. So take the opposite stand simply because you CAN..not because you sincerely believe in it.

Nothing ought to come for free or it loses its value . Which is why the caveat of responsibility is a necessary adjunct. Ideally a healthy level of self censorship would eliminate need for censuring. But in the event that has not been of consideration, then our freedom of speech has to be exercised to condemn it.

Its subjective how one is guided to willfully use his freedom. If those like Gautham Prasad justify their liberties to denigrate a legend then we can certainly exercise ours to demolish his usage of it .

The Government has responded and initiated action against the channels in question.

If the Pope had to tender an apology for his almost innocuous utterings to do with terrorism, the ‘Cartoon controversy’ created into a global furore then how does Gautham Prasad imagine that his level of blasphemous comedy is going to be above reproach? Its obvious that he has not performed before an Indian American audience, or rather he has not dared to. I am quite certain of the outcome.

And then he has the gall to suggest ‘over time you get the maturity to laugh about it.” About what? Why should we develop a maturity to laugh about Gandhi ?

Or maybe he needs to grow up and adopt a real profession which involves real talent..not one which uses the Father of the Nation as a crutch to help foreigners smirk and tickle their funny bone.

*I have intentionally avoided inserting a link to his site or the youtube. He does not deserve to be seen in ‘the act’.

  2. Gosh, this is totally totally outrageous. You just _DONT_ use the Father of the Nation as a prop in a comedy show.. and you NEVER EVER involve him in a pole-dance. Mr. Gautham Parsad has crossed all lines of indecency .. he should pay for it; in such a way that no one will ever dare to do such a thing again.

  4. This is so disrespectful of gandhiji’s essence of a man of peace… it should not be allowed to be aired, let alone made!!

I cannot understand, an Indian comedian would disrespect gandhi in this way….

    despicable!

  7. I am going to stand up for free speech- the Unalienable right of any comedian. The role of a comedian is to entertain but also to criticize politics/ policies/current state of society etc. In my opinion I think Gautham Prasad has done just that.
My big question (and Prasad’s surely) is why should we subserviently treat Gandhi as a Supreme Being- free from censure. Yes he is the father of the nation but he wasnt/isnt the UBER MENSCHEN, GOD or whatever you want to call HIM. He was a human and as such is and should be open to criticism/ridicule.

  8. @Sanjay..yes the fact that he is in New york has contributed either to the deadening of his emotions or encouraging his gall.

    Hi Kiran,

Absolutely..I guess if he is half much an artist as he perceives himself to be, then shame and ridicule that he has faced will be stringent enough.

Hey *North*..you being a Canadian seem taken aback, since Gandhi was a global figure. But sadly Prasad is an Indian and so are a host of others who scoff at those who were appalled at the scoffing of Gandhi.

  10. Hi Murat,

I disagree , as is quite obvious from my post.

Respoding to your argument, where you have made a few pertinent points, let me elucidate my stand on it.

You said : “I am going to stand up for free speech- the Unalienable right of any comedian. The role of a comedian is to entertain but also to criticize politics/ policies/current state of society etc. In my opinion I think Gautham Prasad has done just that.”

Prior to being a comedian, which he is by virtue of his profession, he is a son, social animal and the citizen of a country. His inalienable rights should therfore encompass unquestionable duties as well. Why do we not like to group words like rights with duties or freedom with responsibility? Terms like ‘checks and balances are so anachronistic today..its a pity.

Further if I may add, ‘free speech’ in all fairness has been granted by the laws of the country to him. The same country which attained that status of an independent nation with the ingenuity of the same Mahatama who he wants to denigrate today with the same freedom he has been accorded.

    You say:

“My big question (and Prasad’s surely) is why should we subserviently treat Gandhi as a Supreme Being- free from censure. Yes he is the father of the nation but he wasnt/isnt the UBER MENSCHEN, GOD or whatever you want to call HIM. He was a human and as such is and should be open to criticism/ridicule.”

My big question is ‘Why Not?‘ Can any of us boast of having attained a fraction of what he has? On what basis can we have the presumptuousness to have a face off with a legend who had a face off with the British, before you were even born so that you can today stand up and say that we have inalienable rights?

Why are words like ‘deference’, respect’ ‘honor’ ‘sanctity’ an antithesis to free speech. Do you question the status of your father in your life despite the fact that he is but a mass of flesh and bones? Is he therefore not deserved of being revered? You dont have to worship a God whose existence is an anomaly, or doubtful,Why not worship those who have attained heights which make them More human among us humans? What Godly traits are you looking for in any case?

In my book a successful comedian is one who is able to extract humor out of his own life, events or the events in his milieu. Its never a good idea to make a person a butt of your ridicule. Its nasty, mean spirited and juvenile, apart from being utterly tasteless and reeking of crass. In this case it wasnt you or me, or another who he chose as a subject, but it was Gandhi.

So who is next? Mother Teresa? After all going by your definition, she was not an Uber menschen, God, supreme Being either? She walked amongst us, 4ft nothing, wrinkled and worn out? Therefore a human and a candidate open to ridicule/criticism…

But..Like I sincerely believe. After all opinions are such because they are subjective..no hard feelings. You are free to ignore my views.

  11. Hi Kaveeta,
Interesting response- however let me pick on a praticular point in your post-
-“Can any of us boast of having attained a fraction of what he has? On what basis can we have the presumptuousness to have a face off with a legend who had a face off with the British, before you were even born so that you can today stand up and say that we have inalienable rights?”- every human should be judged on the kind of person he/she is rather than what they have achieved. Here is an extract from Ved Mehta’s book- “Mahatma Gandhi and His Apostles”:
“Gandhi was a great political figure of the twentieth century. With his fasts and scripture reading, his dedication to non-violence, simplicity and celibacy, he captured the imagination of millions in India. Myths began to develop during his life time and when he died a martyrs’ death there were those who compared him to Christ. His human weaknesses have been obscured by mythologizers fearful of debasing and sensationalizing their martyred hero. All men have weaknesses. Gandhi had his. He was no doubt a Mahatma whose greatness must NOT be minimized. ”
The fact is Gandhi wasnt faultless- so lets dwelve in to his faults and see if Gautham Prasad’s pole dance has helped in exposing any of these-
“Gandhi became a brahamachari (celibate) when he was thirty-six. As a brahamachari, he would normally have been expected to eschew all contact with women, but instead he took naked women to bed with him. Amongst those who slept with him were Sushila Nayar, Sucheta Kriplani, Abha and Manu….During his Noakhali tour of 1946, Gandhi used to sleep with the nineteen-year-old Manu. When Nirmal Bose, his Bengali interpreter, saw this he protested, asserting that the experiments must be having bad psychological effects on the girl…….No doubt Gandhi’s interest in women, whether he called it ‘experiments in brahamacharya’ or ‘nature cure,’ was directed at a conscious suppression of his own sexual feelings. The same is confirmed by his close political associate C. Rajagopalachari who told Mehta, ‘it is now said that he was born so holy that he had a natural bent for brahamacharya, but actually he was highly sexed.- the more he tried to restrain himself and repress his sexual impulses . . . the more oversexed and sex-conscious he became ”
Now I am not sure what exactly Gautam Prasad’s motives were- but when i did see his post on You Tube- I started doing some research on Gandhi and learnt about a man’s weakness. Today we Indians claim he is the Father of the Nation- but just as any child learns from his father’s strengths and weaknesses- Isnt it our duty to learn from Gandhi’s too.Gandhi’s strengths were numerous (remember it being drilled in to our heads in History & Civics classes at school), however when did we ever learn about the man’s weaknesses. Aristotle once told Alexander “Do what I preach, not what I practice”- however what he did NOT say was “Do what I preach, treat me like God and never critically analyse what I do/practice” (this seems to be the general Indian perspective- hence Ved Mehta’s book was almost banned by the Parliament).
So coming back to my original point- what did I get out of Gautham Prasad’s pole dance- well it made me step back, and try and understand (or rather search for) a motive behind his act. I carried out some research and learnt that Gandhi created a political awakening among the masses of India and led them through the doors of freedom. He became one with the poor by living a simple and austere life. He identified with the Untouchables by doing their work with his own hands. He practiced what he preached. He sacrificed the career of his children to his concept of moral education by denying them an academic education, which in his view ‘perpetuated slavery. BUT I also learnt that Gandhi’s ideas on sex are certainly outdated. He believed that a woman’s interest in sex is submissive and self-sacrificing. He assumed that women derived no pleasure from such activity. Moreover what I learnt was that in a bid appease his own self-interest (celibacy) he sometimes neglected the psycological/physiological impact it was having on the women (some very young) he slept with. Does that make him lesser of a man. Maybe- but I will/still dont deny his achievements and contribution to our nation. Perhaps you dont agree but I feel that a honest indian should not shy away from revealing the Mahatma’s weaknesses (albeit through comedy and/or a pole-dance)- for it is when we can understand the man fully-can we understand and assess his vision for modern India.
I think Gautham Prasad is a TRUE, HONEST Indian and comedian- even if his objective was only to be controversial- Prasad has helped me understand Gandhi better and hence better appreciate Gandhi as a leader and a human being.

  12. Hi Kaveeta,
One more thing regarding your comment about Mother Theresa- did you ever meet the Lady. I did- in fact she has been the motivation behind my current work- I can assure you if she were alive today, she would not say “dont ridicule me- instead she would say ridicule me as much as you want- but also show the same compassion I have shown to fellow humans”- After all blind reverence doesn’t benefit any society-also blind cristicism doesn’t- however positive criticism which helps us understand the context/reasons for any great persons contribution/action does.

  13. Hi
belated happy Lohri to all of you…
just one thing that bothered me in your post, this suggestion (yes i do get that you don’t mean it THAT way) to do the same about Prophet Muhammad.
    1. Gandhi was a politician ALSO, maybe we can spare him the GODLY status and not compare him to Prophet Mohammad, or assume even for a second also that Gandhi should be for Indians what Prophet Mohammad is for Muslims. A lot of people do not agree with Gandhi’s political opinions, comparing him to God is silly.
    2. Just because Muslims get offended so easily and create a furore over the Danish cartoons, must we create a controversy over everything too? Is this a competition for getting provoked?

  16. Puja that came out as defence for Gautam Prasad? that is if you were refering to my comment. i have nothing to say to you then because i was only and only refering to the comment about Prophet Mohammad.
anyway, good that people protested and he aplogised, many Indians do need something to do.Maybe Shiv Sena and SIMIs can open training centres for such people and teach how to effectively get provoked and elicit a response in the quickest time.
Oh I have nothing against them, everyone needs an agenda to feel good about themselves…

Democracy is difficult to stay in , maybe we also need military rule and theocracy, so that everyone is told by the govt how to think, what to think.

having said that , i do agree that there are something that would make me bristle and angry too.
I also get upset when the patriarchs make disgusting statements or when crimes against women happen.
but there is a difference between saying ‘yeh ghalat hai’ and ‘main teri maa ko aise boloon?’

Or maybe we need to stoop down only to make our points.
Yes Arabic muslims or all kinds of Muslims did not tolerate jokes about Mohammad but that is okay your Shiv Sena also got hysterical over MF Hussains paintings, guys!
and is Gandhiji a GOD? sure, call him a saint if you want, but is he a GOD also?
    whatever!

    Comment by aluchaat — January 15, 2007 @ 8:12 am | Reply

  17. Hi Murat,

I almost expected that response from you, since this is the one area of Gandhis life which has been at the centre of any conversation to do with Gandhi.

    My point:

    1) What does this have to do with RIDICULING the man in a buffoonery act? If you do not agree with a set of values are you then going to denigrate the being?

2)If there is a contrary ideation in place. whats stopping anyone to write a thesis ? Or write a Book as Ved Mehta has done. Its a free world. But you Never trample upon the dignity of a National leader a man who is a symbol of Peace and non-violence the world over!

    3) Sexual preferences to me are a personal choice. As long as they are not breaking societal rules and causing grievous harm, I do not like to comment on them. In Gandhis case, whatever you have written is common knowledge, ONLY BECAUSE HE CHOSE to make it so. He could have kept it under wraps. Here is a man whose life was an open book..so therfore open to ridicule as well. Since people who keep their life under lock and key love to peep into neighbours windows..our voyeuristic traits are pretty apparent. And for Gods sake, what sin has he committed? On the one hand you INSIST that he is only human , and then go on to denying hum human frailities?? Why?

I re-iterate..whatever, his personal life..it should have Nothing to do with a public spectacle disrespecting his memory.

No Murat.. I have never met Mother Teresa. However, I know people who have. In fact the yesteryear actress Shashikala, once told me of the magical meeting she had with her and then decided to spend a few years in her mission. So I have been vicariously led into her life. I was shaken on her death and remember telling my children that she will soon be anointed sainthood..which has happened.

When we respect people or disrespect them, it is not of import what they would have said about the event. It is what we then feel about ourselves. Mother Teresa may not object to being the butt of ridicule, but does that license us to go ahead and do it? It is about ourselves first..isnt it? When we harm another, in thought word or deed, the first casualty is.. us, not the other!

    Nice talking to you..

  18. Aluchaat,

first of all its upsetting when a single sentence is taken out of a text which has been written passionately, and then split hair on..its called ‘baal ki khaal khinchna’

Now to answer it.. The reference to Prophet Mohammed was NOT to place Mahatama on a similar pedestal..show more maturity than that, while reading a post. Its not needed to be spoon fed.. I assume the intelligence of readers on the net..or am I making a fallacy here! In the same sentence I have also mentioned parents, grandparents and ancestors, which you conveniently ignore.. ..so does that make them God too? or make the Prophet less Human? No objections there? Grow up..

The reference was to underline that Hindus basically today as if hold little that merits to be honoured, revered venerated ( as is fairly obvious even from this thread )..but Muslims do. Therefore it was suggested hypothetically that Prasad, had he been of Muslim faith, or even otherwise, would not have DARED to expostulate thus ..to any rational mind, less prone to prejudices, this would have been understood as being the obvious trend of thought.

It was NOT a suggestion for US to take off on in retribution…Honestly I dont believe this. Its imbecilic, your deductions. READ READ.. As is more than clear, you have neither bothered to, nor have you cared to ponder a bit on the core of the post. All you have done is ‘jump the gun’ and ride into an assault. Please refrain from taking the liberty to hijack my post into a Hindu Muslim debate since it suits your skewed sense of confrontational tactics..I will resent it strongly.

About the controversy bit. I find it a rather inane, specious argument not worthy of a response really. Democracy , by no stretch of imagination or license connotes freedom to ridicule, humiliate, denigrate the father of the Nation. If that is what it means to you , then its time that you educate yourself on what it means to be exercising your democratic rights responsibly!

Have you cared to see the clipping in question ? OR just cursorily ‘heard of it’ or ‘read it’ with as much vs as little attention as you did my post? OR are just taking a stand against my stand? Well I have seen it, on air. It appalled me.It has caused a “national outrage” Check this This is not a personal bias in a single post. Although I would have objected even if I were the solitary one..which is the PURPOSE of me writing a blog..to vent MY Views… I no like.I write..you no like, no read..simple. I have condemned the act..unequivocally, categorically and if need be will do so stridently as well..anything else?

Your next post is addressed to puja..so I guess I will leave it to her to respond. Though I personally object to the way you have opted to express yourself, made insulting references to my post. Its one thing to debate on issues..but what you have done is assign motives, without being privy to anything but your warped sense of righteouness, erroneous understanding of the post and a kind of personal vendetta..reasons for which I dont wish to know nor am bothered about. Speaking from a self made Moral High ground as well.. with “you Indians” as an attitude, is quite simply put..DISGUSTING. But like I believe, people choose to use their freedom differently, It makes little or no difference to me..since I choose how it will affect me, or how much.or not at all.

But ofcourse if it goes beyond a point and you continue to go off on a tangent, with NO relevance to this sincerely written post, then I will disallow your comments here.

  19. Hi puja,

its okay if people express their views. It is healthy to have an exchange of ideas and thoughts..Ofcourse the most essential ingredient is that the it should be without obvious rancor and with the attitude to express a valid viewpoint, not contrariness for the sake of it ..And of course people should have a point to make in the first place..after they have made a serious reading of a post..with intelligence and focussedness, which as is apparent is a rarity these days.

I enjoyed conversing with Murat..he made his points with earnestness and keenness.I enjoyed reciprocating with equal sincerity.

It has always surprised me that some people do not respond to the issue in question but tend to get aggravated by a stand on the issue. They are all agog about Prasads freedom and whatever..but forget that it is Universal when commenting on another like, say me, who has exercised her freedom of speech as well, to express a view. The only difference is that I would rather exercise my freedom to speech in Condemning one who has disrespected a World leader, while they will choose to speak on another who has.

    Personal choices..tell tale.

  32. This letter is for the purpose of obtaining the truth and is not meant to offend anyone. If anyone reading this letter has any information please respond to basaiks@hotmail.com. I have heard stories of Gandhi Ji and his goat and I was wondering why it was not portrayed in the recent film on his life. I have heard there was quite a deep connection between the two, a type of love if you will. I would like to learn more about these relations between the two of them, did Gandhi Ji give the goat a pet name, scheduled time to spend with the goat, dinner dates, was it treated like part of the family? These are the questions I am hoping to have answered, because in my mind, in all the other great love stories people are praised for them and shrines are built in there names. Why wasn’t the goat given the same respect and courtesy? I do realize that if I was in India asking these questions, I could be thrown in jail. I am not in India but am trying to learn more of the significant people of the country. My intentions are not to offend anyone, i am just trying to get to the truth of the matter. if you are not able to answer these questions please pass it on to someone who can. Thanks again for taking the time to read this, I know it maybe offensive to some of you, but this is not a joke. I am trying to get the truth for myself. Please contact me with any information at basaiks@hotmail.com. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this email.

    Sincerely Yours,

    Nav
